Website chat widget vs Telegram is a question most shop owners ask once they decide to answer customers faster. Both are places where a customer can type "do you have this?" and get an answer. They are not the same, though: they reach different moments in the customer's day, start differently, and suit different shops. This article compares the two side by side, using Vendigit's widget and Telegram channel as the concrete example, and ends with a simple way to decide.

## Two doors, one assistant

First, what stays the same. In Vendigit, the widget and Telegram are two entry points to one assistant. On both channels it:

- answers from your product feed and your site's policy pages;
- fills product cards with names, prices and links straight from the feed, and is instructed not to state a price or stock level it didn't find;
- replies in Ukrainian, Russian or English, matching the customer;
- hands the conversation to your team on the same rules (a request for a person, complaints, refunds, wholesale, damaged deliveries, questions about an existing order).

All dialogs land in the same inbox with a channel badge, with the same handover and take-over controls, and they share one monthly allowance. So the choice is not about which channel is "smarter". It is about where your customers are when they have a question.

## The website widget

The widget is a chat button on your site. A customer browsing a product page clicks it and asks.

**Strengths**

- **It meets the customer at the moment of doubt.** They are looking at the product. The question comes while the intent is highest.
- **No account needed.** Anyone on your site can ask, whether or not they use a messenger.
- **Replies stream in** as they are written, so the customer sees the answer start almost at once.
- **It looks like part of your shop.** You set the position (bottom right or left), accent colour, welcome message and how the assistant is named. It runs in an isolated container, so your site's styles cannot break it and it cannot break your site.
- **It only works on your domain.** The widget answers on your shop's host and its `www.` version; another site copying the snippet gets nothing.

**Limits**

- **It lives on your site.** If a customer found you on Instagram or in a Telegram channel and never visits the site, the widget never sees them.
- **You need to add a script.** Installation is one snippet pasted before `</body>`. Many platforms allow this through a theme or code-injection setting; if yours does not let you add custom scripts, check its documentation first.

**Plan:** included on every paid plan, starting with Starter at $20 a month.

## Telegram

The Telegram channel is a link, `t.me/…?start=…`, that opens a chat with Vendigit's managed bot, routed to your shop. You share it wherever customers find you.

**Strengths**

- **Customers are already there.** In Ukraine, Telegram is the most used messenger: a Gradus Research study presented in October 2024 found [90% of respondents use it](https://unn.ua/en/news/entertainment-content-outstrips-news-in-terms-of-popularity-on-the-web-telegram-leads-among-messengers-research). Globally, it [passed one billion monthly users](https://techcrunch.com/2025/03/19/telegram-founder-pavel-durov-says-app-now-has-1b-users-calls-whatsapp-a-cheap-watered-down-imitation) in 2025.
- **The conversation stays in the customer's pocket.** It sits in their chat list. They can come back tomorrow and continue.
- **It works off your site.** A link goes into a social profile, a Telegram channel post, a packaging insert, an email signature. It is also an option if your storefront does not let you add a widget script.
- **No bot setup.** You do not create a bot or handle a token. You create the channel in the dashboard, open the link once to activate it, and share it.

**Limits**

- **The customer has to start.** Telegram bots [cannot start conversations with users](https://core.telegram.org/bots). Nobody writes to you in Telegram unless they find and open your link.
- **It is a shared bot.** Customers talk to Vendigit's bot, routed to your shop. You choose how the assistant introduces itself, but the bot account itself is not branded per shop.
- **Replies arrive as one message per turn**, not streamed.
- **One Telegram channel per shop.**

**Plan:** Growth ($65 a month) and above.

## Side by side

| | Website widget | Telegram |
|---|---|---|
| Where the customer is | On your site, often on a product page | In Telegram, wherever they found your link |
| Who starts the chat | The visitor clicks the chat button | The customer opens your `t.me` link |
| Account needed | No | A Telegram account |
| Setup | Paste one snippet before `</body>` | Create the channel, open the link once, share it |
| How replies arrive | Streamed as they are written | One message per turn |
| Customisation | Position, colour, welcome message, assistant name, UTM tags | Assistant name, UTM tags |
| Where it works | Only on your shop's domain and `www.` | Anywhere the link is shared |
| Plan | Every paid plan (from Starter, $20) | Growth ($65) and above |
| Inbox, handover, rules | Same | Same |

UTM tags on both channels mean product links the assistant sends can be told apart in your analytics, so you can see which channel brings visits to which products.

## How to choose

### Start with the widget if

- most of your traffic arrives on your site, from search, ads or marketplaces that link out;
- you want to test an assistant before spending more (Starter has a 14-day free trial);
- your customers mostly use other messengers, as in many markets outside Ukraine.

### Add Telegram if

- customers already write to you in Telegram, and your managers answer there by hand;
- you have an active Telegram channel, Instagram or other social presence that sends people to you without a site visit;
- you sell to customers who come back often and like to keep the chat.

### Use both if

- your audience is mixed: some customers browse the site, others write from social media. One assistant, two doors, one inbox. Dialogs from both channels share your plan's allowance (2,000 a month on Growth), so you do not need to split a budget.

A practical route: install the widget on Starter, look at the questions it gets for a couple of weeks in the dashboard, then move to Growth and add Telegram once you know the assistant answers your catalog well. Telegram setup is covered step by step in [Telegram bot for an online store](/journal/telegram-bot-for-online-store).

## What neither channel does

Neither the widget nor Telegram turns the assistant into a checkout. It does not take orders, accept payments, check order status or collect contact details. It answers questions about products, prices, stock, delivery, payment and returns, and passes the rest to a person. For a shop, this keeps the assistant on the safe side of things: it informs and helps the customer decide, and your existing checkout and team handle the transaction.

Both channels also answer at any hour, which is where they pay off most. See [answering customer messages at night](/journal/telegram-sales-night-inquiries) for a Black Friday plan built on that.

## FAQ

### Can I use the widget and Telegram at the same time?

Yes, on Growth and above. Both use the same assistant, and conversations from both arrive in one inbox, marked by channel.

### Do dialogs from Telegram cost extra?

No. Widget and Telegram dialogs come out of the same monthly allowance. A dialog is one conversation; a long one counts once per 8 customer messages.

### Will the widget slow down or break my site's design?

It loads one script and renders in an isolated container, so your site's CSS and the widget's styles do not affect each other.

### Can I get Telegram on Starter?

No. Starter includes the widget only. Telegram starts at Growth, $65 a month. See all plans on the [pricing section](/pricing).

The simplest way to find out which channel your customers prefer is to open one and watch. [Start the 14-day free trial](https://app.vendigit.com/register). No card required. Put the widget on your site, test it in the simulator, and add Telegram when you move to Growth.
